Tim Cook Details Apple's Driverless Car Ambitions

Apple's Tim Cook spoke to Bloomberg about the company's self driving car ambitions. He made it clear the company was focused right now on the underlying technology and not in building a car itself - at least in the immediate future. Though he did not rule out building a car.

“We’re focusing on autonomous systems,”
Cook said in an interview on Bloomberg Television.
“It’s a core technology that we view as very important. We sort of see it as the mother of all AI projects. It’s probably one of the most difficult A.I. projects actually to work on.”
“There is a major disruption looming there,”
Cook said on Bloomberg Television, discussing 1) self-driving technology, 2) electric vehicles and 3) ride-hailing.
“You’ve got kind of three vectors of change happening generally in the same time frame.”

There is definitely not a lack of companies pursuing similar projects but due to the size, scope, and resources available to it, Apple is one company likely to lead the way in autonomous technology in the coming years. Whereas many other companies go out of their way to discuss progress, Apple has always been secretive with upcoming projects. Therefore, no one really knows how much progress they have made. It will be very interesting to continue to watch their progress in this exciting space.
